Hermann Hesse, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946, answered more than 30,000 letters during his lifetime. Several thousand of them have now been found. In this collection letters have been selected in which Hesse takes a stand against the problems of his time, the tension between the individual and society, the problems of politics, religion, art and psychology. These letters show not so much the genesis but more the result of his thinking. Because many of Hesse’s own experiences have been incorporated into the letters
